In addition to its green rolling hills, popular folklore, and world-renowned hospitality, Ireland is also known for its world-class education system. In 2021, Ireland attracted 35,000 international students from over 160 countries, with its high quality of life, affordability, multicultural communities, and direct access to the rest of Europe. In fact, according to the Irish Universities Association, all Irish universities rank within the top 3% worldwide and consistently outperforms universities around the world in global student satisfaction rankings.

The island of Ireland is located on the western-most edge of Europe, and is divided by two parts. One part is the Republic of Ireland, which is a sovereign country, and the other part is Northern Ireland, which belongs to the United Kingdom. For the sake of simplicity, the Republic of Ireland is typically referred to as ‘Ireland’; as such when ApplyBoard refers to Ireland we are referring to the Republic of Ireland.

The capital city of Ireland is Dublin, a populous city which is home to more than one-fourth of the country’s total population.

The population of Ireland is currently over 5 million people based on the latest census of population data. As Ireland is continuing to grow, many people of different cultures and religious backgrounds reside in Ireland, with visible minorities making up 12% of the population of Ireland—a proportion that doubled in the first decade of the 21st century.
